Sleep Boosting Smoothies

Happy New Year!

As the new year gets under way, there are plenty of people who are looking to make a lifestyle change.

Whilst the usual options for new year resolutions centre around health kicks, organisation and starting new hobbies, an important goal often gets left by the road side- sleep improvement.

The new year is a great time to sort your sleep schedule and really perfect your sleep routine.

A brilliant way to boost sleep and to improve your health is to make evening smoothies before heading to bed.

Check out these four recipes- all of which are bound to improve your rest.

Super Green Smoothie

This smoothie is packed full of bananas, which are known to improve sleep due to their level of magnesium and potassium, both muscle relaxants. A hearty handful of spinach, also rich in magnesium, potassium and calcium, aids sleep and helps to promote recovery throughout the night. Pulse this smoothie with a dash of vitamin C rich orange juice for a drowsy drink before bed. See recipe below:

2 ripe bananas, 2 cups of frozen spinach, 1 apple, 1/2 cup orange juice, 1/2 cup of water, 12 ice cubes.

Sweet Dreams Smoothie

The main ingredient in this smoothie is warm milk, which releases tryptophan, a hormone which boosts serotonin and aids sleep. Bananas are added again for potassium and magnesium whilst the addition of cinnamon helps to relax muscles under stress, sending you off to sleep fast. See recipe below.

1/2 cup warm milk, 1/2 banana, dash of cinnamon, dash of vanilla extract and tea spoon of honey.

Nightcap Smoothie

This smoothie is super simple yet can be a great drink to make before heading to bed. The banana stands as a staple of any nighttime smoothie, rich in potassium and magnesium, whilst dates can be a great metabolism booster, meaning you wake in the morning feeling less bloated- they also promote the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin. See recipe below.

1 banana, 1 date, 1 fig, 12 cashews.

Sleep Smoothie

Back again with the bananas! One is added to this smoothie for its incredible sleep boosting affects. Milk boosts serotonin and is calcium rich for night time recovery, whilst the addition of avocado boosts serotonin and the kiwi adds recovery boosting and flu fighting vitamin C to the mix, to ensure you wake up feeling great! See recipe below.

1 banana, 1 kiwi, 1/2 avocado, 1 cup of milk and a splash of honey.
